In La Rochelle, a man throws himself into the channel at the wheel of a car

A spectacular intervention in the night from Saturday to Sunday, for the firefighters of La Rochelle: around one o’clock in the morning, a man in his fifties tried to end his life driving a self-service rental carwhich he launched at full speed into the access channel to the old port.

But once in the water, the desperate man seems to have changed his mind: he got out of the sinking vehicle, before being helped to reach shore by a witness, who did not hesitate to jump into the water. The victim was taken care of by the firefighters, transported to the hospital of La Rochelle.

Firefighters divers then intervened to locate the wreckage of the Yelo electric car, which was in danger of obstruct boat traffic in the channel. They were then able to place slings in the vehicle, for a lifting operation with the support of a crane truck from the marina.

After borrowing the vehicle from a Yelo station located in the immediate vicinity, the driver plunged into the water from this advance in the channel. © Radio France
