“In La Hague, it had never been so hot for a century”

For Météo France, in the 50, the month of July can be summed up above all in two words: heat and drought.

In all towns and countryside in Manche, the average temperature was 2 to 4 degrees above normal for the seasons. “For the entire department, there is an average temperature of 26.3 degrees in July. That is, 1 degree more than in previous years. In 2018, the average temperature was 25.3 “, explains Météo France Manche.

July 17, 18 and 19: three days with absolute records

During this period of heat wave, absolute records fell almost everywhere in the department and here are the three maximum temperatures:

  • 40.4°C in Longeville-sur-Mer
  • 40.3°C at Pontorson
  • 39.5°C in Coutances

In The Hague, it had never been so hot for 100 years

A place in the Cotentin is on the podium: La Hague. This often very cool corner has experienced an absolute record that had not been recorded for a century!

On the night of July 18 to 19, between two and three in the morning, Météo France and the inhabitants recorded 32.8 degrees.

“There were 3 days with temperatures above 25 degrees and 2 days with temperatures above 30 degrees. It may make you smile, but for the Channel, it’s unheard of”adds Météo France.

No rain greater than 1 millimeter since June 30

During the month of July, only 7.3 millimeters of rain fell on the department, while on average, 60 to 90 millimeters of rain falls. Since the existence of Météo France readings, the month of July 2022 could be the driest since 1959.

“There has been no rain greater than 1 millimeter since June 30. The maximum reading in the department is 7 millimeters. Soil humidity is close to the value of 1976 (year of great drought in France)”concluded Meteo France.
