As Ukrainian troops gradually crossed the Russian border in early August, Russian civilians are living to the rhythm of strikes near the front. Report from Kursk, at the heart of these clashes.

Some 2,000 sandbags pile up outside School No. 25 in Kursk, Russia. A month ago, the war came brutally closer: Ukrainian troops are 80 kilometers away, in Russian territory. “It’s so that children can go to school […]and that in the event of an air raid alert, they can take shelter on the ground floor”explains a man on the construction site.

On the outskirts of the city, along kilometers of border, lines of defense have recently been dug in the fields. But in the small town of Lgov, some neighborhoods are within range of Ukrainian artillery. Olga, a resident, shows bullet holes on the facade of her house. Another strike dug a huge crater near the swimming pool. The residents are gradually returning despite the mayor’s warnings. After the Ukrainian advance, from August 9, the front stabilized up to about twenty kilometers inside Russian territory.
