In Kherson (Ukraine), the threat still hangs over the inhabitants who are struggling to find a peaceful daily life.
Near Kherson (Ukraine), in a liberated village, danger lurks. Six-year-old Maria has understood this well. “Mom won’t let me go outside to play because there’s still a lot of bomb debris, dangerous things that can explode if I step on them”, confides the child. During the Russian occupation, she and her mother lived for months in the basement of a house, to the rhythm of the bombardments. “I was afraid to go out, I was lying on the ground and it was horrible. The ground and the house were shaking all the time”confides Maria.
Leaving the Kherson region, the Russian army left behind hundreds of mines and ammunition, like a school, which served as a prison. “I suffer when I see the school like this, we are going to clean up, but the task is enormous”, says a manager. It will still take months of demining and cleaning before Maria finds the school benches.
