The tourism tap cut off in Capri. The Italian island banned visitors from disembarking via an order on Saturday June 22 due to a lack of water, following supply problems. The mayor, Paolo Falco, took this decision on Saturday morning, forcing several ferries to turn around off the coast of Naples.

By decreeing the ban, the city councilor mentioned “a real emergency situation”emphasizing that the tanks were “burning out”. “The emergency would be aggravated by the arrival of thousands of tourists who arrive every day in Capri”, did he declare. The ban, which does not apply to residents, will remain in effect until further notice, the elected official said. On site, residents can obtain 25 liters of drinking water per household from a tanker truck parked in one of the city squares, the municipality specifies in a press release.

The company responsible for supplying the island with water reported a technical problem that occurred on the mainland on Thursday. Although since resolved, the problems persist. Famous for its white villas and high-end hotels, Capri has some 13,000 inhabitants year-round and in summer attracts a large number of tourists who arrive for the day.
