To deal with several shootings in just one month against a backdrop of drug trafficking, the CAF of Isère is reducing or eliminating social benefits for convicted traffickers. A local initiative that is unprecedented.

In Grenoble (Isère), drug dealers can now see their rights to social benefits reduced or removed. Residents of the affected neighborhoods are divided. “I think there are other ways to punish (…). We might touch the trafficker’s partner, who is struggling to support her family”says a woman in particular. As part of this pilot operation in France, the Family Allowance Fund receives information from the Grenoble prosecutor.

When a person is convicted of drug trafficking, their benefits can be withdrawn. Their real income, from drugs, is taken into account. So far, the operation has reduced or eliminated the benefits of 55 people. “This is not what will stop drug trafficking tomorrow. On the other hand, it will protect public money, because there is no reason why drug traffickers should also benefit from family allowances.”believes Me. Michèle Girot-Marc, President of the Grenoble Bar.

The city and its surrounding area have been subject to a series of shootings for several weeks, against a backdrop of score-settling.
