This is the latest in a long series of incidents linked to contraband alcohol, which is extremely widespread across the subcontinent. Fifty-three people died and more than a hundred were hospitalized after drinking adulterated alcohol sold on the black market in a small town in the state of Tamil Nadu, in southern India, according to a latest report published Sunday June 23, Indian media reported.
State leader MK Stalin said the alcohol, arrack, a common drink in South and Southeast Asia, had been mixed with methanol and quickly killed dozens of people. Some became blind, one of the known effects of methanol, and were taken to hospital. Others began to collapse and died in the street, or even upon arriving at the hospital, residents testified.
