The Carcraon pond, in Domalain (Ille-et-Vilaine), is one of the Breton sites polluted by PFAS. PFAS are the “eternal pollutants” which are used in the manufacture of textiles, kitchen utensils and cosmetics. Very persistent particles that are found in particular in the water of this pond. Residents are warning about the presence of these pollutants, of unexplained origin.
Pollutants little known to the general public
This pond is not located near industrial emitters. So how is such pollution possible? In a laboratory at the National School of Chemistry in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), chemists work on these pollutants. They know they are very volatile. “PFAS are traveling pollutants”, indicates Khalil Hanna, physico-chemist at this school. These “eternal pollutants” are little known to the general public, and little analyzed. They come in addition to other pollution, including pesticides and cyanobacteria, as in this Carcraon pond, in very poor ecological condition.
