Hungarians rushed to the polls on Sunday, April 3, to vote in the legislative elections. Viktor Orban left to win a fourth consecutive term. Facing him, an unprecedented alliance was nevertheless determined to overthrow the nationalist leader, close to Vladimir Putin.

Viktor Orban will not ultimately have fallen. According to the first estimates published on the evening of Sunday 3 April, the Hungarian Prime Minister’s camp is the winner of the legislative elections and should obtain almost 55% of the votes, ie 5 points more than during the last elections. The conflict in Ukraine, a border country, will not have succeeded in destabilizing the campaign of the ultraconservative. “This war concerns two of our neighbours, two great countries. She is dangerous, we must not intervene. I don’t think my opponents understood the risks that Hungary runs if she goes to war. It would be tragic“, he had declared in particular before the vote.

Facing him stood a large coalition of very heterogeneous parties, made up of socialists, environmentalists and members of the old radical right, all led by a conservative. Their common point was to dislodge at all costs the Prime Minister in place for nearly 12 years. Despite his victory, his detractors are numerous and accuse him, in unison with the European Union, of multiple attacks on the rule of law and of controlling the media.
