It is a town located south of the island of Basse-Terre, in Guadeloupe: Capesterre-Belle-Eau, 20,000 inhabitants. It is mainly known for its three waterfalls and its decor because it is bordered by the ocean and palm trees. Here, Marine Le Pen won almost 80% of the votes in the second round of the presidential election. This is not an isolated case because, in Guadeloupe, the candidate of the National Rally totaled 70% of the vote against 25% in 2017. She even created a real blue wave overseas, arriving at the top of the second round in the West Indies, Reunion, Guyana, Mayotte and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.
In a beach bar in Capesterre-Belle-Eau, Clotilde toasts champagne with some friends to celebrate her candidate’s score. “Anything except Macron!”launches this caregiver. “We know who Macron is, we suffered and it was not easy. It’s a shame, but we still have to suffer.” In front of the town hall, there is only one poster stuck on a panel after the election: that of Marine Le Pen. Cynthia passes with a few groceries in hand.
“Anyway, it was either Mélenchon or Marine Le Pen. Mélenchon in the first round, Marine Le Pen in the second.”
Cynthia, resident of Capesterre-Belle-Eau
She sums it up with a “Macron, get out”. “There is a problem with the personality of the president and his way of expressing himself. There are things that should not be said.” Emmanuel Macron’s statement that wanted “annoy” the non-vaccinated ones in particular remained in his throat. “It does not go through.”
“Marine Le Pen is a woman who speaks truth, who speaks well and who says everything.” Germain Parant, a historic activist for access to water, is one of the architects of the candidate’s score in the town. He joined the National Rally but believes that the vote of the inhabitants is not worth adhering to his ideas. “MArine Le Pen seized the right opportunity. The fact that we were martyred for five years meant that there was only her to be able to give us the means of satisfaction and to offer us good things for the future.
“You have to take into account an expression”, recognizes from Le Gosier, near Pointe-à-Pitre, Guy Losbar. The president of the departmental council is close to Emmanuel Macron. “The population wants more proximity, that a number of problems that have existed for years are resolved. When there has been such a vote, we are obliged to take note.” From now on, he is on the bridge to prepare the battle of the legislative elections. He will always be in support of Emmanuel Macron, but without the label La République en Marche.
