In Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe, the economy is based on the cultivation of sugar cane, but the last sugar factory broke down at the start of the year, pushing farmers to suspend the harvest.
Bordered by some of the most beautiful beaches in the Guadeloupe archipelago, Marie-Galante is the island of sugar cane, but for how long. Since April 2021, the last sugar refinery has been shut down. It is however the essential engine of the island, because a large part of its inhabitants live of this culture and export 80% of their sugar to Europe.
With its eight hectares, Ferdy Creantor is one of the biggest producers of Marie-Galante. Despite the difficulties encountered this year, he prepares the next harvest by cutting the canes, to allow the buds to develop. Manual work provided by Haitian seasonal workers paid 70 euros per day, according to the owner. a cost of labor and a lower cost of sugar that worried producers, as did the shutdown of the plant that transforms cane into sugar.
