In Gironde, 700 firefighters remain mobilized, including a large contingent of men and women from overseas and other European countries.

Armed with their thermal cameras, firefighters from Polynesia hunt down roadside smokers in Gironde. They are about twenty, arrived in the night. “Twenty hours by plane, plus eight hours by road, it’s a bit long, but it’s worth it”, says one of them. On the site of this former sawmill, some of the 146 Poles mobilized are hard at work to cool the still burning earth.

Not far from here, is located the logistics base where Germans, Austrians, Romanians and Poles live together. Out of 650 men on site, half are foreigners. “We are trying to do our best to extinguish the fires still active in the ground. It is a real opportunity to be able to exchange with the French, with the Germans”, says a Polish firefighter. Valuable support for French firefighters, who have been active for more than a month. Because once the fire is fixed, the work must continue.
