The Oscars are held on the night of Sunday March 10 to Monday March 11, in Los Angeles. Like every year, the Hollywood high mass of cinema awards its awards considered among the most prestigious in the seventh art. Besides Oppenheimer nominated 13 times, the French film Anatomy of a fall by Justine Triet appears in five categories, including that of best actress, with the German Sandra Hüller who is in the running. Already awarded a César, the 45-year-old actress is originally from Thuringia, a region in the heart of Germany.
The actress grew up in Friedrichroda, a town of 7,200 inhabitants. The open-air theater where she took her first steps on stage is still there, perched on the heights of the city, in the middle of the spruce and birch forest. “She had a lot of ambition, recalls Annett Fuchsher friend from the time in her high school theater group. She put a lot of effort into it. One day, she played the role of a man and to be 100 percent realistic, she worked on the masculine gait, the way of expressing oneself and the body language. For us, it was just a hobby. But she took it very, very seriously.”
“She plays the characters as if they were her own life”
Now retired, Petra Möller, Sandra Hüller’s former economics professor, continues to follow her career. “I saw ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ with a friend and we were very, very impressed, she confides. She’s great. She plays the characters as if they were her own life. Of course she deserves an Oscar. I don’t think there’s a better actress right now.”
At age 20, Sandra Hüller moved to Berlin to study drama and her stays at Friedrichroda became rarer. Over time, the city has fallen into relative anonymity, except in recent days, explains the mayor, Thomas Klöppel: “It’s a source of pride when we have personalities who make our city known around the worldhe said. Since the Oscar nominations, we’ve been asked all the time. We make a community calendar every year and send it to her each time so she can see a little of her homeland.”
That evening, in room number 7, the cinema of the big neighboring city is showing Anatomy of a fall and the film has been showing since November. “It’s full until the last place”, explains Yvonne Mitzenheim, the cinema director. “That had calmed down a bit but now, with the Oscars, it’s full again. Many have already seen the film three or four times. It’s a great success. It would be nice if she visited us one day, we would be delighted.” she adds.
For three days, the cinema has also been broadcasting The area of interest, where Sandra Hüller plays the wife of the commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The film was nominated in five categories at the Oscars, as were Anatomy of a fall.
