While 2021 is among the ten hottest years on record in the world, according to information revealed by franceinfo on Wednesday, December 15, France was, for its part, colder. Indeed, temperatures were lower than in 2020, ranking the year 2021 as the 21st hottest since 1900. However, temperatures have still increased by 0.2 degrees compared to 20 or 40 years ago. .

This freshness in 2021 is mainly due to exceptional snowfall, late frost at the beginning of April then a wet and cool summer in the north of France because of the “cold drop”. However, the average temperatures in France actually hide very big contrasts, with 830 heat records broken locally in France.

In terms of sunshine, Marignane (Bouches-du-Rhône) holds the 2021 record for the sunniest city in France, while Brest (Finistère) is the city that has seen the least sun. The Breton city however benefited from 8% of additional sunshine. This is also another highlight of 2021: the north of France has benefited more from the sun this year, unlike the south which has benefited less.

The Hexagon is however an exception since Martinique, Guadeloupe and Reunion experienced a year of drought. Outside our borders, Greece, Italy and Spain have gone through a much hotter summer.
