Even today, the employment of people aged over 55 in France is low compared to our European neighbours. “In the midst of a debate on extending the retirement age, the employment rate for seniors is now a problem. Only 56% of 55-64 year olds have a job, and France is not a very good student in this area if we compare this rate to those of our European neighbors“, explains the journalist Alexandre Peyroutpresent on the set of 12/13, Monday, October 24.
In Germany, the employment rate for 55-64 year olds is 71.8%. He’s from 76.9% for Sweden. On average, this rate is 60.5% at European Union level. How can this lower rate in France be explained? “This is often because companies are reluctant to employ employees of this age. Often very experienced, they are therefore more expensive to employ, and then they are also very often victims of prejudices as to their skills: not agile enough on computer media, sometimes considered too slow in general“, continues Alexander Peyrout. To improve this rate, Ministry of Labour said to consider a downward revision of the duration ofunemployment benefit to encourage a return to work.
