The music platform Spotify is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its launch in Europe this Tuesday, October 10. An opportunity to remember that today, it is French rappers who occupy the top of the listening podium.
French rap is the favorite musical genre of French Spotify users, and the most listened to podcast in this language is that of AFP, On the stringaccording to data that the platform unveiled Tuesday for its 15th anniversary.
Jul, Ninho, Damso
When Spotify launched in 2008, “the most listened to artists in France were Anglo-Saxon pop-rock artists”but “since 2016, French hip-hop artists have dominated the French rankings every year”indicated the French branch of the Swedish group, which does not communicate detailed figures.
In 2008, the three most listened to artists on Spotify in France were the British pop-rock groups Coldplay and the American The Killers, ahead of the American rapper Kanye West. In 2022, on the other hand, the first three places on the podium were occupied by French rappers, Jul, Ninho and Damso.
The three most listened to titles in France since the launch of the platform are again French rap: Organized band from the collective of Marseille rappers launched by Jul, 13 Organisé (2020), The life we lead by Ninho (2019) and The kiffance by Naps (2021).
Finally, the three French artists most listened to in the world since the launch of Spotify are David Guetta, DJ Snake and Daft Punk.
“On the string”
On the podcast side, it’s the current affairs podcast On the string from AFP (Agence France-Presse) which is the most listened to in France on Spotify since its launch, ahead of Raw. And World Time (respectively produced by the video media and the eponymous daily newspaper).
Launched in 2021, On the string is the daily podcast from AFP and its 1,700 journalists around the world. It is particularly listened to on Spotify, but less on other platforms: globally, it ranks 21st among the most listened to French podcasts (264,000 downloads worldwide in August and 235,000 in France), according to the latest figures from the ACPM (Alliance for Press and Media Figures).
The world’s number one audio platform, Spotify recorded a record jump in its active users worldwide, to 551 million at the end of the second quarter, according to figures published at the end of July.
