In Dinard, a high school opens its boarding school to accommodate seasonal workers

In Brittany, 50,000 seasonal jobs are still to be filled. In an attempt to reduce this figure, the region, in consultation with the town of Dinard and the hotel school, opens the doors of the establishment’s boarding school to 20 seasonal workers in July and August. An essential solution for young people and restaurateurs on the Emerald Coast.

Each seasonal worker lives alone in a room, this one is usually reserved for four high school students. At 21, Jason Le Rigoleur is a bartender this summer at Nessay in Saint-Briac, a hotel, bar, restaurant. “I take my ease. I use two cupboards, I also installed my TV and my console.”

This young man from Rennes must share sanitary facilities, a microwave and a refrigerator with the 19 other seasonal workers. “I will adapt, but as a rule we eat with colleagues before the service.”

Despite these conditions, this room at the boarding school remains the best solution. “You can’t find rent for less than 400 euros a week for seasonal workers. If there were no accommodation like that, it’s impossible to have a season.”

At 18, Aminata Thimbo could not have worked at the Ombelle restaurant in Dinard without this opportunity. “It’s complicated to find accommodation in summer: it’s expensive and holidaymakers have been booking them for a long time.”

In total, Aminata Thimbo will have to pay 600 euros in rent this summer.

the rent for these rooms is set at 300 eurossome restaurateurs support it.

An essential solution for professionals

Restaurant owners have understood the housing issue well in order to recruit seasonal workers, according to Oscar Legendre, the president of the Emerald Coast hotel union. “In tourist areas in the summer, there is strong real estate pressure so if we want to have seasonal workers, obviously we have to offer accommodation!”

It always remains 150 vacancies at restaurants on the Emerald Coast.

Another Breton high school opens its boarding school for seasonal workers

Beyond the restorers, other professionals need labor in the summer, this is the case of the slaughterhouse of Cooperl in Lamballe in the Côtes-d’Armor. The region also allowed the opening of the Henri-Avril high school boarding school this summer.
