Food clearance stores are one of the trends of the moment. There are now 3,200 in France, and their turnover has jumped 60% in a few years. Report in the Sarthe.
To Arnage (Sarthe)the Frais Malin store displays reductions of 30 to 75% on its products. “We’ve been coming here every week or ten days, for a year”confides a client. “99 cents for apples, while we go to other stores, it takes 2.50 euros, even 3 euros”said another. Fruits and vegetables are sold off because they are stained, or too small to be sold in conventional stores. There are also fresh products whose use-by date is approaching.
The store collects the products directly twice a day from major retailers or local producers, who sell them to it at low cost. As soon as they arrive, they are labeled by the manager, Alexandre Jousseau. So that nothing is lost, the products must be sold as quickly as possible. “In an hour and a half, most of the products will be on the shelves, and tonight we will have at least half of the merchandise sold.”says Alexander Jousseau. Without stock or intermediary, the manager manages to generate a margin of 50%as in the large distribution.
