In China, Beijing was forced to ease its restrictive measures to fight against Covid-19, in the face of popular revolt. In Shanghai, the city’s 26 million inhabitants are no longer even allowed to leave their homes to buy food.

If on images published on Chinese social networks, certain buildings in Shanghai (China) are freed, the majority of the inhabitants are still confined, Tuesday April 12. The police watch over it, sometimes with the help of drones. The streets are empty, but well guarded. Some buildings are even padlocked, without explanation. The population is finding it increasingly difficult to accept the measures, which are increasingly drastic.

Patients or contact cases, with or without symptoms, are taken willingly or by force to isolation camps. “There are more than 40 people on the bus, including children and elderly people. We drove all night without eating or drinking”, writes a woman. More than 200,000 patients are patient in these quarantine places with Spartan conditions. The Chinese government has no intention of bending. “We must maintain this zero Covid policy, and we must do so relentlessly, and without any hesitation”, comments Zheng Junhua, director of a field hospital. Many other Chinese cities are affected by confinement, specifies Arnauld Miguet, of France Télévisions China.
