In Cherbourg, in Manche, the National Rally and Jordan Bardella came out on top for the first time, during the European elections, with 27% of the vote. So how can we explain the breakthrough of the far right in the city?
Along the port of Cherbourg (Channel), for a year, there has been a four-meter-high wall stretching for three kilometers with barbed wire and cameras. Reinforced system in the face of intrusions by migrants, who try to board trucks leaving for the United Kingdom and Ireland, by sea. Repeated attempts witnessed helplessly by several residents. “We see them passing by every day,” a woman exclaims. In the European elections, the surprise came from the National Rally, which came first in the poll, with 27% of the votes. This is unheard of in this city, anchored on the left.
Two weeks before the first round of the legislative elections, the theme of immigration will be central, to the dismay of several voters. “That means that we have a real social problem in terms of inclusiveness, whether for migrants or difference,” testified a Cherbourg resident. The second priority subject for the French during the European elections, immigration should once again feature in the campaign.
