This Saturday, April 2, 2022, a fire broke out in an apartment at La Glacerie, in Cherbourg. Firefighters arrived around 7:30 a.m. to try to contain the fire. Two children did not survive.
Early this morning, the fire started from an apartment – located on the first floor of a building, rue des Eaux Minérales in the town of La Glacerie (Cherbourg-en-Cotentin). They were 50 firefighters dispatched to the scene. Supported by marine firefighters. Because the fire was violent. When first aid arrived, the roof of the building was already totally ablaze. Four water hoses were needed to contain the flames.
A total of ten people were involved in the fire, including the four family members occupying the burning apartment. Three people are unhurt and three are slightly injured.
The parents, seriously injured, were transported to the Cotentin Public Hospital Center. Their two boys, ages 8 and 4, did not survive. One of them was taken into cardiac arrest, but the resuscitation maneuvers were unsuccessful. The second child was found dead in the apartment.
Rescuers finally managed to bring the flames under control around 10 a.m. The fire is now out and the neighborhood remains cordoned off so that the firefighters can carry out their excavation operations which will last for some time. As for the inhabitants of the building, they will be relocated by the city.
