This is a first in the history of the French Blood Establishment (EFS): a vital emergency bulletin was launched last week, as the reserves have dropped. They had even been under the security threshold for a few days. Faced with this situation, donors are mobilizing in the center of Châteauroux, where stocks have almost doubled in one week.
230 donations needed per week in Indre
Before this alert launched by the EFS, donations made in Indre were almost twice as many as the target : “We must have 230 donations per week; before the call we had 120 donations, so barely 50% of our goal. This week, we are at 220 donations, so we thank the donors who have mobilized“explains Stéphanie Larrère, in charge of promoting donations in Indre.
Requirements for donating blood
It is advisable to make an appointment with the EFS to donate blood. There are a few conditions to meet: be between 18 and 70 years old, and weigh at least 50 kilos. You have to come with your identity card.
If you have recently had covid-19, you can also donate under specific conditions, depending on whether your vaccination schedule is complete or not:
- If your vaccination schedule is complete : you must wait 7 days after the onset of symptoms to donate blood. Or 7 days after the date of your positive test if you are asymptomatic. The period can be reduced to 5 days if you have carried out a negative antigen or PCR test in the meantime, with no symptoms for at least 48 hours.
- If your vaccination schedule is incomplete : you must wait 10 days after the onset of symptoms or after the date you tested positive if you are asymptomatic. This period can be reduced to 7 days in the event of a negative test and in the absence of signs of infection for at least 48 hours.
- If you are contact, and you have a complete vaccination schedule, you can donate blood without having to wait. If your vaccination schedule is not complete, you must however wait 7 days before donating blood.
