The city of Châlons-en-Champagne drives for soft mobility. The town hall has invested in a pedal cart to transport kindergarten and primary school students. #IlsOntLaSolution

It’s a strange school transport that has appeared in the streets of the city for several weeks: a totally electric rosalie. It is in this four-wheeler with six pedals that eight schoolchildren now join their establishment every morning. “I think that’s good, because it doesn’t pollute the planet and it’s fun to pedal “, tells the young Linoé.

An atypical and ecological means of transport which also appealed to parents. “We were offered this service by the town hall to go to school nearby, we said yes right away, it’s fun for the children and it’s good for the environment “. Everything has been designed to facilitate the transport of schoolchildren. There is a chest to store schoolbags, but also tarpaulins to protect its young users from bad weather. Child safety is also ensured with compulsory belts and helmets.

With this bicycle-bus, the exhaust pipe ball in front of the school is over. A way for the municipality to unclog certain streets but above all to change the habits of parents of students. “The objective is to encourage soft mobility. Sometimes, we see parents who take their vehicle for only 500 meters “, underlines Sabine Bourg-Broc, the deputy mayor of Châlons-en-Champagne in charge of education.

This service is free. If this six-month experience proves successful, another such bike-bus could be purchased by the municipality to serve other congested areas of the city.
