During the day it is a place of worship, but when evening arrives, the Saint-André Cathedral in Bordeaux transforms and lights up. Until December 17, she lets technology penetrate through games of light and sound.
As Bordeaux falls asleep, the majestic Saint-André Cathedral lights up in a symphony of dazzling colors, revealing a daring project: 1 year to create a light and sound show that adorns the interior of the dome in entirety.
This monumental challenge aimed to immerse the public in history, explore the crafts of the future, and discover the prowess of the great builders of a thousand-year-old building through the magic of light and sound.
The challenge is finally met thanks to an exceptional marriage between art and technology in the name of Luminiscencecombo of light and reminiscence of the past.
A new kind of craftsmanship
This show is produced through three-dimensional video mapping, deployed 360 degrees using 80 projectors, carefully positioned according to a precise model and digital calculations.
Twenty-five people, true artists of light, worked seven months for its creation. Through this digital intervention, the cathedral seems to have a new look.
This new kind of craftsmanship is also guided by a soundtrack, composed of melodies distributed with precision by a sound engineer. The digital music, specially designed for this experience, will be mixed with an on-site orchestra which will offer some concerts and which will even use the cathedral’s great organ. The whole thing offers a magical atmosphere, bringing to life the magnificent architectural details of the dome.
“In the cathedral, we are used to welcoming artisans, stonemasons, master glassmakers, and illuminators. Today, we can discover a form of digital craftsmanship, where individuals devote infinite time to the smallest details to sculpt space with light.”
Jean-Clément GuezRector of Saint-André Cathedral
