Education: in Béziers, the first schools are experimenting with uniforms

– ()

Monday February 26, schoolchildren at an establishment in Béziers, in Hérault, wear uniforms. This measure could be adopted everywhere in France from 2026.

It feels like the start of the school year for a class of schoolchildren in Béziers (Hérault). Monday, February 26 in the morning, it was a class photo, because for the first time, returning from vacation is in uniform, with pants or a skirt of your choice and a blazer. A return to class in the spotlight, because it is one of the first schools in France to experiment with it. “At least all the children are standardized, so there are no social differences in terms of outfits”explains a mother.

Doubts about the effectiveness of the measure

A few hours before, Lola chose the skirt in addition to the sweater and the polo shirt. “It’s practical because you no longer have to choose what clothes you’re going to wear for the next day”, underlines his mother. For her twins, the mother did not have to pay anything. The cost, 200 euros per child, is covered by the city and the State. One of the objectives of the uniform is to limit school bullying and social inequalities. Teachers’ unions and many researchers doubt the effectiveness of this measure. If in two years, the experiment is deemed conclusive, the uniform could be generalized throughout France at the start of the 2026 school year.
