In Bayonne, the Mousserolles car park, the last free car park in the city center, becomes paying

There is officially more free parking in the center of Bayonne. From 1 October, that of Mousserolles will also payt. Located a stone’s throw from Petit Bayonne, it offered a hundred places free of charge along the ramparts, next to the Nautique. From October 1, it will therefore be divided into two parts. On the left side, it will accommodate the school buses coming from all over the Basque Country, which until now arrived along theSaint Andrew’s Church. On the second part, parking spaces, with a parking meter, at 1 euro for half a day (four hours). Since the end of the Bayonne Festival, the car park was closed to the public to carry out the work necessary to redevelop the spaces, bus shelters and parking spaces.

For the municipal majority behind this decision, it is a means of get rid of the many sucker cars. “We did a study“explains Loic Corrégé, deputy mayor for parking. She tells us that many cars stayed for days, even weeks and confiscated these spaces from residents, shoppers, people who come to work in Bayonne”. By making parking chargeable, the deputy mayor also hopes encourage people to switch to public transportit’s a real political will, to encourage people to change their habits“.

Not supported by the minority

For its part, the municipal minority Bihar Baiona / Demain Bayonne sees a double negative effect. The first, according to them, it does not make it possible to free up places for the residents of the plittle Bayonne who can no longer park. Moreover, on the incentive aspect to switch to public transport, the minority sees in 1 euro for half a day a undeterrent price.
