The sun is like red. Direction Bali, the Indonesian island that attracts more and more tourists every year. Facing the setting sun, the fullness is total.

Bali is the most photographed island in the world, especially for its sky and light. At 5pm, like every day, tourists and Balinese flock to a beach in the south of the island. Julien Couturier, a Frenchman, has been offering to brave the waves at sunset for 13 years. The vendors of doughnuts, ice creams and bakso are not mistaken: this is the time when they sell the most.

This colorful sky is unchanged, but since the 1980s, the cliffs of Uluwatu have been concreted over to accommodate ever-increasing numbers of tourists, who come to contemplate the sun while listening to music or getting massages. A little further along the coast, megaclubs are forming. Bali welcomed 5 million visitors in 2023 and changes from year to year. Alban Kibarer, a French real estate developer who has been established since 2010, rents a west-facing penthouse for 500 euros a night. And when you see the sky, you can understand why Bali is nicknamed the island of the gods.
