They are between three and five years old and, for most, this is their first cinema session. A discovery staged by the Première Toiles festival, organized by the association Les Montreurs d’Images, from October 22 to November 6 in Agen. For the little ones, it is an opportunity to approach, through the 7th art, the theme of emotions with, for example, the projection of the Pixar Vice versadirected by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen in 2015. “At that age, we are sensitive to these kinds of emotions, whether it’s anger, love, affection or fear, all of this is present in the films we offer”, explains Jacqueline Pimouguet, administrator of Les Montreurs d’Images. For parents, it is also a way of being able to understand delicate subjects such as death more naturally. “I thought it was well explained, especially since it’s not necessarily easy to talk about this with children”, confides a mother.
The projected works are mostly adapted from children’s books. Kids can see their favorite characters move and talk on the screen. “It’s interesting to see the children in front of the animation, amazed because it moves and there are voices”, explains a father. At the end of the screenings, budding moviegoers seem conquered: “I like going to the cinema because I love emotions”, explains a young spectator.
While the public tends to desert cinemas, the Première Toiles festival tries to create a direct link between children and the 7th art. A way of educating the new generation to a form of expression originally designed for dark rooms but which is now tending to become more democratic in our living rooms.
