On the African continent, the conflict in Ukraine could have catastrophic consequences on access to food in countries facing famine.

The main market in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, still attracts so many people. The stalls are full but something has changed with the war in Ukraine. Food prices have been rising sharply for several days, especially flour, corn and sugar. Here, 3 out of 4 inhabitants live below the poverty line. “Every day, we see the prices skyrocket. The authorities need to intervene“, says a resident.

A concern shared across the continent as in Nigeria, the richest and most populous country in Africa. In this bakery in the capital Lagos, the consequences of the war are already visible. Diesel generators are used to make bread and as gasoline is more expensive, the price of bread also increases. In Africa, the price of basic necessities has increased by 50% on average.
