11-year-old boy moves his phantom limb while grimacing in pain in the hospital Al-Aqsa of Gaza. His right foot was amputated, while a pin repaired his broken left leg. In another room, mothers are closer to their children. A young girl had both legs amputated. “I don’t want prosthetics, I want my legs back”confides Lyan Al Baz, aged 13.
Adolescents and children often amputees
Children and adolescents presenting themselves at the hospital often find themselves amputated as soon as they arrive at the emergency room, but not always, as a doctor present in Gaza explains. “We also have children whose initial wounds worsen and become infectedu due to the health situation, the lack of hygiene and the lack of initial post-operative follow-up“, testifies Marie-Aure Perreaut, member of Doctors Without Borders in Gaza. Many children mutilated by war want to continue their lives as before despite the amputation.
