Benjamin Besse, director of clinical research at Gustave Roussy and guest of 19/20 info, looks back on the evolution of cancer disease in France. He explains the reasons for these changes.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, there will be a 50% increase in new annual cases by 2040. Benjamin Besse, specialist in thoracic cancers, explains this phenomenon: “This is explained firstly by the increase in the population: there are more of us, so there are more cases. And then, by the aging of the population […] It is above all these two factors which contribute to increasing the risk of cancer, and then there are of course the risk factors for cancer..”

Habits to adopt to avoid illness?

On average, one in five people will develop cancer during their lifetime. Asked about solutions to avoid illness, Benjamin Besse mentions several measures. For example: stopping smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, eating better or exercising would be useful actions to protect yourself.
