In 2021, the media talked too much about Covid-19, Eric Zemmour’s presidential candidacy and Lionel Messi’s arrival at PSG, according to the 2022 edition of the barometer The cross/Kantar Public onepoint published Friday, January 21.
It is mainly the health situation and the candidacy of Eric Zemmour which have saturated the French. They are eight out of ten (79%) to believe that the Covid-19 epidemic has been too present in the media. Three-quarters (73%) believe that the media have talked too much about the entry into the campaign of the polemicist. The transfer of footballer Lionel Messi to PSG was too present for half of those questioned (50%).
Conversely, 41% of French people believe that COP26, the Glasgow International Climate Conference, was sub-reported to the media. 39% regret that the publication of the Sauvé report on sexual abuse in the Church did not have more space. And 38% believe that the media did not speak enough or correctly about the increase in energy prices in France.
On the other hand, six out of ten French people (60%) welcome the good treatment of Josephine Baker’s entry into the Pantheon in November 2021, 57% appreciated the balanced treatment of the elections in Germany and the departure of Chancellor Angela Merkel, and 54% believe that the media spoke properly about the start of the trial of the attacks of November 13, 2015.
The barometer is also interested in the treatment by the media of major social issues. And according to this survey, climate change and its consequences have been badly or very badly treated in the media for 53% of those questioned (compared to 26% who welcome its treatment). 48% of French people believe that violence against women has been badly or very badly addressed, compared to 37% who perceive the coverage of this news as correct. Similarly, the Covid-19 epidemic was poorly treated in 2021 for 46% of respondents (compared to 34%).
The La Croix/Kantar Public onepoint barometer, 2022 edition, was carried out from January 5 to 11, 2022, on a national sample of 1,016 people, representative of the entire population aged 18 and over. The interviews were carried out face-to-face at the respondents’ homes.
