Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni in "The good life" by Federico Fellini, in 1960 ( / PICTURE ALLIANCE)

In 1960, The good life by Federico Fellini wins the Palme d’Or at Cannes. This film follows the wanderings of a tabloid journalist played by Marcello Mastroianni, during a week of social life in Rome in a fruitless search for love and happiness.

Today considered a classic of cinema, it was nevertheless greeted by scandal, on its release, for its description of an idle and debauched society. What is less known is that this film is largely inspired by a real news item that occurred in 1953: the discovery on a beach in Rome of the body of a young woman, Wilma Montesi.
