“Impromptus” by Franz Schubert, Ronald Brautigam

When he came to inaugurate the Bourgie Room pianoforte in April 2022, Ronald Brautigam had only one obsession: the ultimate works of Schubert. The recording was scheduled for the summer of 2022 and he was preparing to go to his friend, the maker Paul McNulty, owner of several copies of Graf pianofortes, to choose his instrument. Brautigam thought about setting his sights on the same instrument for impromptus and sonatas: “The good thing about the Grafs of that era is that they have four or five registration pedals, so you can choose your colors like an organist,” said -he. Everything that was planned becomes reality. Here are the impromptu recorded from July 11 to 16, 2022, and we almost want to cry from A to Z because we feel the work of a life, a record recorded as if the artist were to disappear the next day. It is not despair that dominates, but fever, the vital force, with, in addition to the colors of a pianoforte of stunning beauty, an indescribable and extremely rare accuracy of dynamic ambitus and atmospheres.
