On Sunday evening, Bundesliga side Werder Bremen achieved their third away win of the season by defeating VfL Wolfsburg 4:2 (1:1). Bremen remains unbeaten on the road, while Wolfsburg struggles to secure a home victory, marking their fourth consecutive home game without a win.

With this result, Bremen climbed up to eighth place in the league standings, having earned the win in this northern face-off. Goals from Mitchell Weiser (45.+5), Felix Agu (51), Marvin Ducksch (67), and Marco Grüll (72) sealed the victory for coach Ole Werner’s squad. For Wolfsburg, Tiago Tomas (19) and Joakim Maehle (79) found the net, but the team’s coach Ralph Hasenhüttl expressed dissatisfaction with the performance, especially after Patrick Wimmer received a red card in the 68th minute, leaving them at 13th in the standings.

Following the match, Hasenhüttl criticized his team’s performance, stating, ‘We lost much of what we built up in recent weeks.’ He added, ‘Many aspects were disjointed in the second half. You can’t defend like that.’

Conversely, Werder’s Weiser was in high spirits, commenting, ‘We played very well for most of the match.’ When discussing Bremen’s struggles at home, with just one point and no goals scored, Weiser expressed confidence, saying, ‘We haven’t found our rhythm in home matches yet, but I’m optimistic we will soon, especially with Champions Bayer Leverkusen coming up next Saturday.’

Wolfsburg Takes Early Lead

Wolfsburg opened the scoring with a somewhat chaotic goal. Captain Maximilian Arnold flicked the ball from a corner into the visitors’ goal, where it possibly deflected off Ducksch at the front post, causing Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer to misjudge the play. The ball struck Zetterer’s forehead and bounced around the five-yard box, ultimately being pushed across the line by Tomas in the 19th minute, making it 1:0 for Wolfsburg.

Equalizer from Werder

Zetterer was crucial in keeping the score from escalating in the 39th minute, making a vital save against Jakub Kaminski. Out of nowhere, just before the end of stoppage time, Werder capitalized on a beautiful cross from Ducksch. Weiser found the back of the net from close range, leveling the match at 1:1 just before halftime.

Setback for Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg faced a blow when Arnold had to leave the match in the 42nd minute after sustaining a significant back contusion during a header duel. Comically, the referee showed Arnold a yellow card while substituting him for delaying the process. This fifth yellow means he will miss the next match against FC St. Pauli.

Bremen Turns the Tide

The second half saw a transformed Bremen side, full of aggression and determination. Despite missing a golden opportunity in the 48th minute, their persistence paid off when Agu scored in the 51st minute, making it 2:1 after a deflected shot from Grüll.

Red Card for Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg’s situation worsened when Wimmer received a red card in the 68th minute for a foul on Grüll in midfield. Just a minute later, Ducksch increased Bremen’s lead to 3:1. Grüll then rounded off a fantastic performance by scoring to extend the lead to 4:1 in the 72nd minute, seemingly sealing the game.

Wolfsburg’s Brief Resurgence

Wolfsburg wasn’t done yet. Joakim Maehle managed to pull one back in the 79th minute, making the score 4:2. However, with the player deficit, Wolfsburg couldn’t muster a convincing response in the closing minutes.
