Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed her “deep pain” following the sinking of a migrant boat. Words that are not enough to extinguish a nascent controversy because it has recently taken measures to make rescues at sea more complicated.
59 migrants lost their lives in the sinking of their boat off the Italian coast. A situation that Giorgia Meloni says she deplores. The NGOs targeted by the decree
One of the provisions provides for example that a boat having taken care of survivors cannot take new boats on its route, in any case not before having deposited the first people rescued in a port. “This risks complicating the task of NGOs, it is they who are targeted by this decree”continues the journalist. “An NGO was fined this week 10,000 euros just hours after the implementation of this decree”says Raphaële Schapira.
