Migrants are still as numerous as ever to attempt the crossing to Great Britain via the Strait of Pas-de-Calais, departing from the French coast. The last one took place 2 days ago in front of flabbergasted tourists. In duplex from Wimereux, we find the journalist Marie-Noëlle Grimaldi, Thursday July 20.
The authorities have decided to strengthen the surveillance system in the face of attempts to cross migrants. “Adapting to the new operating methods of smugglers is what the Pas-de-Calais prefecture aims to do by deciding to strengthen the workforce”reports journalist Marie-Noëlle Grimaldi, duplex from Wimereux (Pas-de-Calais), Thursday July 20. “She wants in particular to tackle the phenomenon of boat taxis, water taxis, which seems to have multiplied in recent months”continues the journalist. The boats can take several dozen migrants on each crossing.
11 boats intercepted last Tuesday
Migrants thus often arrive by swimming, as was the case last Tuesday on the beach of Boulogne-sur-Mer, “in front of dumbfounded vacationers”. “The idea of (…) putting more law enforcement on the coast, for me, is heresy. Unfortunately, it really puts you in danger since it lengthens the crossing of the zodiacs”deplores Olivier Ternisien, co-president of the Osmose 62 association. Many migrants attempt the crossing at the risk of their lives. “On Tuesday, 17 boat departures were recorded on the coast, 11 were intercepted by the police”concludes Marie-Noëlle Grimaldi.
