World Autism Day is on Saturday, April 2. On this occasion, the 12/13 looked at the journey of 15,000 autistic children attending school in France, following a young autistic girl in middle school.
Every morning, passing the door of his college in Nevers (Nievre)Adonis Honoré, 15, needs a ritual with very precise guidelines. She arrives at 8:30 amand patient alone in the hall. With her, an alarm clock that rings at 8:45 am to let him know it’s time to go to class. Her class is an Ulis class, a specialized unit accommodating seven autistic students. Here, all activities are displayed and everyone has their place. To be reassuring, the framework must be predictable.
Each student works at their own pace and level. “It’s an apprenticeship that will allow them to gain autonomy, to manage, to be able to read small things” explains Sandra Chovetschool teacher. Adonis Honoré also participates in music lessons in a 5th grade class, because the objective is also to allow better inclusion of autistic children. Each year, 8,000 autistic children are born in France. For nearly 30% of them, there is no solution after the age of 18.
