“I’m a person who believes in the principle of second chances” – Daniel Brière talks about his son, Carson, and the wheelchair incident

“I can speak on this subject. We all make mistakes in life. I am a person who believes in the principle of second chances. But you have to want to improve and get back up. Carson has accomplished a lot since then. He was embarrassed and disappointed in himself.”

“He’s not perfect today, but he took charge. He works on himself, he worked in the community too.

“I’m not saying he’ll never make another mistake. But he wants to become a better person. He was affected by this. He wasn’t proud. I’m proud of the way he responds. He chose to roll up his sleeves. He did not act like a person who could get away with it easily since he is the son of Daniel Brière. He was repentant and blamed himself for the young woman [Sydney Benes].”

Slovakia and France

Aged 24, Carson Brière headed to Europe.

“Carson loved it, staying at home, but he realized it was time for him to leave,” Daniel said. He chose to play hockey in Slovakia for the start of the year, and now in France. He’s far from home.”

As a father, Daniel reached out to his son even though he said he was shocked and described his gesture as “inexcusable.”

“You want to be hard on your child to make him realize what he did. But at the same time, you have to worry about him too. You don’t want it to get even darker. It was very dark in front of him. He didn’t see the way out. He needed to navigate all of this. He plays in 2e division in Neuilly-sur-Marne. He takes out his French. He didn’t think he needed to use it!”
