Illiteracy: parents want to learn to help their children

On the occasion of Family Literacy Day, parents from Trois-Rivières want to improve their knowledge of written and spoken French at the Mauritian Organization Center for Services and Popular Education (COMSEP).

Play-based learning activities were organized for the occasion.

Some parents sometimes have difficulty with help with homework and lessons.

“I have a six-year-old boy who is going to first grade next year so it would be good to be able to help him,” explained Gisèle Martel, for whom mastering the language is still a challenge. .

In fact, for almost 55% of the region’s population, it is difficult to fully understand a longer and more complex text according to statistics from the Literacy Foundation dating from 2021.

“There are people who are completely illiterate, who can barely read and write their names. Afterwards, you have semi-functional and functional ones”, mentioned the assistant coordinator at COMSEP, Marie-Josée Tardif.

On this Family Literacy Day, parents and children took part in workshops to hone different skills.

According to stakeholders, 25% of the population has to deal with the challenges of illiteracy.
