Some Ile-de-France residents had chosen to invest in a henhouse in order to eat fresh eggs. However, on Monday November 20, the Île-de-France Regional Health Agency warned of POP pollution. What about it?
Chickens in the city, a city dweller’s dream now threatened by pollution. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) is warning of widespread contamination of domestic eggs for Paris and 410 municipalities in Île-de-France. “For many [de clients]the first thing was being able to eat fresh eggs (…), so I think there will be a big obstacle to having chickens at home”recognizes Tanguy Ltemporel, founder of “To each his own chicken”.
What risks?
The ARS discovered significant levels of POPs, pollutants organic persistenton 90% eggs analyzed in domestic henhouses in the Ile-de-France region. Where does this pollution come from? For years, industrial activities or incinerators have been releasing POPs in the atmosphere which are coming settle into the ground. These pollutants are ingested by chickens and found in their eggs. Until now, no large-scale study has quantified it. Health risks are established, including reproductive and endocrine risks. Industrial eggs produced in Île-de-France are not affected by this ban.
