Poland’s Iga Swiatek, world number one, won in three sets 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 over Czech Karolina Muchova in the women’s singles final of the French Open on Saturday.
For Swiatek, 22, it’s a second consecutive triumph – and a third in four years – on clay at Roland-Garros, and a fourth career title in women’s singles tournaments at the Grand Slam.
As a result, she became the youngest player since Monica Seles, between 1990 and 1992, to achieve consecutive triumphs at the French Open.
She is also the third woman in the professional era, inaugurated in 1968, to begin her career with four victories in as many finals at major tournaments. The other two are Seles and Japanese Naomi Osaka.
After two hours 46 minutes of sustained action, the duel ended when Muchova, 43rd in the world, committed her third double fault of the match.
After seeing the ball land in the net, Swiatek dropped his racquet, covered his face with both hands before crouching down.
