She didn’t keep the suspense going. In a hurry to regain her throne as world number 1, Iga Swiatek made short work of the American Jessica Pegula (6-1, 6-0), in the final of the WTA Masters in Cancun, Monday November 6. In the humid Mexican heat, the Pole did not even need an hour to win in the final match of the 2023 season (59 minutes). Starting off quickly in the first set, she accelerated again in the second, offering a real demonstration. Notably, she did not lose a single set in this tournament which brings together the eight best players on the circuit.

At 22, Iga Swiatek fills her cupboard with a 17th career trophy, her sixth this season. She finished first in the world for the second year in a row. The latter had left her throne in favor of Aryna Sabalenka last September after having occupied it for 75 weeks since April 2022 – a period marked by an impressive unbeaten run of 37 matches, broken by Alizé Cornet at Wimbledon in July 2022. The Belarusian had earned her place at the top of the rankings after her final at the US Open, lost to Coco Gauff, taking advantage of the early elimination of Iga Swiatek, in the round of 16.

Caroline Garcia now 20th in the world

Absent from the tournament because she was not qualified, Caroline Garcia lost the points she had gleaned by winning the same WTA Masters which was held in 2022 in Forth Worth (United States). She finished this year in ups and downs at 20th place in the world, which nevertheless remains the best ranking of a Tricolore at the end of this year 2023. The Lyonnaise did not manage to live up to her previous season (4 titles and a semi-final at the US Open), but was the only one to reach the second week of a Grand Slam tournament, at the Australian Open (round of 16).
