His new song, “If I eat, I go to hell”, in which she talks about her eating disorders, comes out on January 26, 2024. And Joyce Jonathan, now 34 years old, is finally ready to talk about her past, between anorexia and bulimia. For 10 years, the singer was obsessed with her weight and food. Today, mother of little Ghjulia, she is no longer ashamed to talk about it. She testifies to our colleagues at Brut.
“If the plane crashes I won’t need to go on a diet.”
She says that her discomfort started around the age of 22, and ended when she became pregnant. At the height of her anorexia, the young woman admits that she behaved in ways bordering on madness: “at the restaurant, I went to the kitchen to check that they weren’t using butter or oil“And Joyce Jonathan admits that during this time, she didn’t see herself as she truly is. She suffered from body dysmorphophobia, and always felt like she was fat.”I hated my body so much, I hated myself for 10 years.” she says.
In fact, she lost 10 kilos in a month and a half following a sentimental disappointment, with the Dukan diet. And the way men looked at her changed, so Joyce Jonathan took a liking to it… A state of physical feverishness such that sometimes after her concerts, the young woman would collapse backstage, she says. Mentally too, Joyce Jonathan admits to having been very tormented. She recounts a plane flight where during turbulence, she said to herself “if the plane crashes, that’s it, I won’t need to go on a diet when I get home, it will be better“.
“Above all, I realized that…”
“I never told myself it was an illness”, explained the one who wants to raise public awareness of these important health issues. Today, Joyce Jonathan reveals her little challenges that she put in place to get through it. She remembers promising herself not to make herself vomit again, or to change the toppings at restaurants. What really sparked her was becoming a mother, she explains, “Above all, I realized that the mother was no longer my mother, but it was me, and I was becoming the mother of my life, too.”.
