“It’s not the first time, nor will it be the last.” Paul Pogba, the French international midfielder who plays for Juventus, posted a message on his Instagram account on Tuesday, May 23, to react to the racist insults suffered by Vinicius Junior in the Valencia stadium on Sunday. His remarks are also accompanied by a photo of the Brazilian player of Real Madrid, a regular victim in Spain of this kind of attitude in the opposing enclosures.
“Bananas, animal noises, songs against us? It’s a mental illness and I think we can all agree that neither ads nor slogans will change these people. If I learned one thing this year is that when someone has a black heart, nothing and no one can change that”, slice, in a concise statement, the former Manchester United player. Before discussing the beginning of a response to a problem that plagues many stadiums: “We must never let this pass again. We have so many examples and I think we all agree today that nothing has changed since. (…) If the institutions do not want find a real solution, let’s try to do it by ourselves, for ourselves.”
Spanish justice has opened a “hate crime” investigation after Real Madrid filed a complaint on Monday. Arrests took place on Tuesday morning, when the Spanish Federation decided to withdraw from the next day the video referee who had officiated during the Valencia-Real match.
