“If tomorrow the demand explodes, we will not be able, in complete safety and in all quality of care, to take charge of all the trauma emergencies of the mountain”, said Doctor Didier Legeais on Franceinfo Sunday, November 7. The surgeon and president of the Syndicat des médecins de l’Isère reacted to Jean Castex’s announcements on Saturday on the protocol accompanying the reopening of ski resorts this fall, after the closure last winter because of the Covid-19.

A reopening which also implies the return of accidents, according to the doctor. “The opening of ski resorts means around a hundred trauma emergencies per day for the Grenoble area that will have to be managed”, he said. “Mountain doctors will, as always, respond to demand and manage minor trauma, but for Grenoble emergency services, around a hundred patients have to be hospitalized for a few hours or sometimes a few days”.

However, the crisis affecting the health sector does not spare the hospital, which is already lacking in staff: “We are already now on a period of almost a week, to be able to manage the trauma surgical emergencies that are happening in our services now”, added Doctor Legeais.

At the request of the Regional Health Agency, the Grenoble hospital as well as that of Voiron, about thirty kilometers away, triggered the white plan (a tool which allows each health establishment to mobilize additional resources to cope with the influx of patients) because of the shortage of healthcare professionals.
