The Stooly company develops furniture that optimizes the space in your homes. Its concept is based on the use of ultra-resistant honeycomb cardboard. The latest addition to its product range: a robust bed that unfolds in 20 seconds!
The idea of a bed that folds and unfolds in a few seconds, and which would not take up space in the house, came to them during the confinement following Covid-19. Lai-Sze Lau and his wife Delphine live with their children in a Parisian apartment and space optimization is a perpetual quest.
That’s good: the couple runs the company Stooly whose trademark is based on the design of furniture adapted to cramped accommodation.
Strength in lightness
Stooly is already a well-known brand for his use of cardboard in the creation of stools or tables in particular. Advantage: they can be folded or unfolded like an origami while benefiting from good robustness despite their lightness.
It was therefore enough to transpose this material to design a bed capable of accommodating unexpected guests or for short stays in extra bed. A ready-made alternative to the inflatable mattress… which you have to constantly re-inflate!
The idea was to allow people who live in a little more restricted spaces to be able to welcome people into their homes, easily and without constraint.
The bed base is therefore composed of ultra-resistant honeycomb cardboard which supports up to 500 kg. The comfortable and padded (and foldable) mattress is also provided.
Cardboard, the ideal material
Lai-Sze Lau is an engineer by training. The cardboard he uses is specially designed for Stooly products as he confirms: “This is no ordinary cardboard. It is really made so that it is very fiber, very rigid and flexible at the same time”.
But this is not the only advantage of cardboard. Stooly’s managers also made their choice based on a strong ecological argument :
It is a recyclable material and it is possible to do a lot of things with the cardboard scraps that we currently have.
Add to this that the cardboard used has waterproof properties. If you spill a glass of water, for example, you have time to mop it up before the liquid seeps deeper.
Developments under study at Stooly
Despite the favorable characteristics of cardboard, Lai-Sze Lau and his wife are currently considering an even more environmentally friendly and waterproof material.
This material must be really water resistant, completely “waterproof”
At the same time, the manufacture of Stooly products, hitherto handled in China, is being relocation to Île-de-France on the side of Marne Valley.
And for those who still doubt, know that Stooly beds are also modular. It is thus possible to decline them in bench or in meridian according to your desires or the desired atmosphere.
