In Iceland, a state of emergency has been declared. A volcano threatens to erupt. A town of 4,000 inhabitants had to be evacuated. On site, some residents fear the worst.

Life has stopped in the town of Grindaviksouthwest of Iceland, Sunday November 12. The country declared a state of emergency over the threat of a volcanic eruption. A flow of magma under the earth’s crust risks rising to the surface. It has already caused hundreds of earthquakes in recent days. Experts fear that the earthquakes herald an imminent eruption.

A city evacuated

Faced with this threat, the authorities decided to evacuate the 4,000 inhabitants of Grindavik. Some are housed in gymnasiums. I refuse to think about the worst case scenario, that I might have nothing left, that the house I built might disappear“, confides a resident. Others are collected from relatives. Between March 2021 and last July, three eruptions weakened the earth’s crust in the same area.
