“I will support Liz Truss and the new government”, promises British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his farewell speech

What there is to know

Bye bye, BoJo. In his last speechTuesday, September 6 in the morning, in front of 10 Downing Street in London, Boris Johnson assured that he “supportdray[t] Liz Truss and the new government every step of the way.” He will now go to the residence of Balmoral, Scotland, where Elizabeth II is. Follow our live.

The handover takes place at Balmoral. Contrary to tradition, the transfer of power does not take place at Buckingham Palace in London, due to the queen’s mobility problems, but in her summer residence in Scotland. The latter will then ask Liz Truss to form a governmentafter the former foreign minister handily beat rival Rishi Sunak to lead the Conservative Party.

Exit the hero of Brexit. After three years and 44 days, barely more than Theresa May, whom he replaced in 2019, Boris Johnson is leaving what he described as “best job in the world”after a series of scandals that triggered dozens of resignations in his close entourage in early July.

Emmanuel Macron reacted. During his press conference on Monday evening, the French head of state was asked about Liz Truss’ victory. He said to “willingness to work among allies and friends”. During her campaign, the latter had nevertheless had unwelcome remarks towards the French president.
