It is a complex well known to the French. Only 22% of inhabitants of France consider their level of English to be satisfactory.
Are the French bad at English? While a large majority of our fellow citizens believe that they are not good enough in the language of Shakespeare, our politicians do not hide it either. Interviewed by the American channel CNN, Jacques Chirac was notably lost in his vocabulary. Nicolas Sarkozy, Jean-Pierre Raffarin or even François Hollande, have also made people talk about them through their linguistic errors.
Complexed French people
According to a study, 47% of French people think they are bad at English, but France is actually in the international average, in 34th place out of 111 countries assessed. According to English teacher Ricardo L. Walker, the weakness of this level is above all due to the fact that the French are too complex. “People criticize themselves so they’re afraid to speak. I find that when they start speaking, they speak well. I think it’s all about trust”he testifies.
